Diabetes mellitus: evaluation of erythrocyte and polymorphonuclear leukocyte rheology

2015

Aim: To explore red blood cells (RBC) and leukocyte rheology, that may be relevant in the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. Methods and Results: Significant alterations have been observed in RBC behaviour using several filtration techniques, but the exploration of RBC deformability by laser diffractometry did not show any abnormality. We have also employed microrheological methods based on fluorescence spectroscopy: membrane microviscosity was evaluated in ghosts, while in intact RBC we explored the membrane polarity gradient using fluorescent fatty acids, the phospholipid and protein lateral mobility using respectively pyrene and pyrene-3-maleimide. Alterations emerged only using the l…

Multispectral autoflourescence detection of skin neoplasia using steady-state techniques

2019

In the current study were used excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) steady-state techniques in a broad spectral regions (excitation at 220-500 nm and emission at 280-850 nm) to achieve the whole set of endogenous fluorophores, existed in normal and neoplastic cutaneous tissues. Several types of benign, dysplastic and malignant types of skin lesions were investigated ex vivo using both EEM and SFS modalities, namely the basal cell papilloma and carcinoma, pigmented nevi, dysplastic nevi, squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma. Histological analysis was used as a “gold standard” for evaluation of clinical diagnosis of the lesions investig…

Determination of mercury in dry-fish samples by microwave digestion and flow injection analysis system cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry

1997

Abstract Flow injection analysis system cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (FIAS-CV-AAS) preceded by a wet digestion in a microwave oven, as a method for measuring mercury in fish was studied. The digestion process and conditions of the FIAS (carrier concentration: HCl 3% v v ; reducing agent: SnCl2 2% w v : filling and injection times: 8 and 25 min, respectively; and sample volumes) were optimized. The analytical parameters of the proposed method (detection limit = 7.7 ng/g; precision intraassay = 6.7%; interassay = 14.0%) demonstrates its adequacy and are similar to the ones (detection limit = 19.4 ng/g; precision intraassay = 11.2%; interassay = 15.9%) obtained using a conventiona…

Occurrence of Fusarium mycotoxins in Italian cereal and cereal products from organic farming.

2013

In the present study, the occurrence of eighteen mycotoxins, nine trichothecenes (deoxynivalenol, 3-acetyl-deoxynivalenol, 15-acetyl-deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, neosolaniol, diacetoxyscirpenol, fusarenon-X, T-2 toxin and HT-2 toxin), three zearalenones (zearalenone, α-zearalenol and β-zearalenol), and six emergent mycotoxins, beauvericin and five enniatins (A, A1, B, B1 and B4), was monitored in different Italian organic cereals and cereal products by using a liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry method. A total of 93 organic cereal samples (wheat, barley, rye and oat) were collected from Italy. Limits of quantification ranged from 5 to 15 μg/kg. 80% of analyze…

Fluidity and cytosolic Ca2+ concentration of circulating polymorphonuclear leukocytes at baseline in some chronic and acute clinical conditions: revi…

2016

Abstract. Objective: In this mini-review we describe the behavior of polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) membrane fluidity and of PMN cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in some chronic and acute clinical conditions. Methods: PMN membrane fluidity was evaluated employing the fluorescent probe Fura-2AM, and PMN cytosolic Ca2+ concentration was evaluated using the fluorescent probe TMA-DPH. Results: From the determination of these two parameters investigated on resting PMNs, an almost constant increase in PMN cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in chronic clinical conditions, such as vascular atherosclerotic disease with and without diabetes mellitus, essential hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and diabe…

The Protohistoric sword from Le Gué-de-Velluire (Vendée, France): a pasticcio's history unveiled by archaeometrical research

2020

International audience; The Gué-de-Velluire sword (Vendée, France) is part of the Rochebrune collection collected during the 19 th and the 20 th centuries and now preserved in the Dobrée Museum in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique, France). The unusual shape of its hilt, its uncorroded rivets and the rather uncommon combination of a bronze grip with an iron blade made this sword an exceptional object. It has been depicted in a large number of papers since the 20 th century, but the question of its authenticity has hardly ever been tackled. New analyses performed with the support of the Dobrée Museum, the Arc'Antique laboratory and Ghent University delivered new data enabling us to discuss this delic…

The Collinear Fast Beam laser Spectroscopy (Cfbs) experiment at Triumf

2016

Abstract Laser spectroscopy experiments at radioactive ion beam facilities around the world investigate properties of exotic nuclei for scientific endeavours such as, but not limited to, the investigation of nuclear structure. Advancements in experimental sensitivity and performance are continuously needed in order to extend the reach of nuclei that can be measured. The collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy ( Cfbs ) setup at Triumf , coupled to an out-of-plane radio-frequency quadrupole Paul trap, enables measurements of some of the most fundamental nuclear properties for long-lived ground and isomeric states. The first comprehensive overview of the Cfbs experiment is provided along with d…

A study of major and trace element accumulation in humic acids

2015

It has been widely studied recent as well as historic accumulation of elements in peat profiles depending on intensity of anthropogenic pollution and thereby peat profiles serve as archives for research of environmental change. Peat ability to accumulate major and trace elements depends on the character of element supply, potency of metal ions to bind functionalities in the peat structure, pH reaction, oxygen presence, presence of complexing compounds, inorganic ions and many other factors. The aim of this study is to assign major and trace element distribution in humic acids (HA) for two well characterized ombrotrophic peat profiles of Eipurs and Dzelve Bog and analyse factors affecting el…

A Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of the Spectroscopic Properties of a DNA-Intercalator Salphen-Type ZnIIComplex

2014

The photophysical and DNA-binding properties of the cationic zinc(II) complex of 5-triethylammonium methyl salicylidene ortho-phenylenediiminato (ZnL 2 + ) were investi- gated by a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. DFT calculations were performed on both the ground and the first excited states of ZnL 2 + and on its possi- ble mono- and dioxidation products, both in vacuo and in selected solvents mimicked by the polarizable continuum model. Comparison of the calculated absorption and fluores- cence transitions with the corresponding experimental data led to the conclusion that visible light induces a two-elec- tron photooxidation process located on the phenylenediimi- nato…
